Creek Watch is an iPhone application that enables you to help monitor the health of your local watershed. Whenever you pass by a waterway, spend a few seconds using the Creek Watch application to snap a picture and report how much water and trash you see. The data is aggregated and shared with water control boards to help them track pollution and manage water resources. You can explore data that people have contributed at www.creekwatch.org and go ahead and download it at the Apple iTunes store.

Now, you can share your Creek Watch reports on Facebook and Twitter to:

1) Increase awareness about the environment and watershed protection.

2) Encourage your friends and networks to download the free app and become ‘citizen scientists’ in less than 30 seconds.

More than 4,000 active users in more than 25 countries worldwide are contributing valuable water data to scientists and officials. Several monitoring programs have been put in place by regional water authorities in cities including San Jose, California. You can read about it here.

IBM Research created an iPhone application to help local water boards collect and analyze critical data about water. A form of crowdsourcing called Citizen Science, people hiking or biking passed a creek or stream can snap a photo with their phones, answer a few simple questions about the condition of the water, and instantly send it off to their local water authority.
